Crusher Bearing housing repairs

CASE STUDY: Jaw Crusher Bearing Housing Repair — Quarrying / Aggregate Processing

Industry: Quarrying / Aggregate Processing Services: Workshop, Precision Machining, Bearing Replacement, Component Repair Equipment: Extec Jaw Crusher — Bearing Housings, Main Shaft Assembly

The Situation

A client requested assistance fitting new bearings to an Extec Jaw Crusher. A site inspection confirmed the bearings were in very poor condition, and there was a reasonable likelihood that the bearing housings themselves would require remedial work before new bearings could be correctly fitted.

The Challenge

Bearing replacement on a jaw crusher is straightforward when the housings are within tolerance. When they’re not, fitting new bearings into damaged or out-of-spec housings simply transfers the problem — the new bearings will fail prematurely for the same reasons the old ones did. Establishing the true condition of the housings before committing to a repair path was essential.

What Qualtex Did

The unit was transported to the Qualtex workshop for disassembly and full inspection. Initial radial clearance checks were recorded before any components were disturbed. The shaft was removed from the main housing, and once old lubricant was cleaned away, all four bearings were extracted from the shaft.

With the shaft and housings cleaned and measured, the findings confirmed the concern — the main bearing housing internal diameters were well outside acceptable tolerances. Premachining was carried out to prepare the surfaces, the housings were rebuilt, and finish machining restored the internal dimensions to specification. Post-repair measurements were recorded and documented for the client’s records.

With the housings back in tolerance, Qualtex’s specialised bearing installation equipment was used to fit the new bearings correctly. The bearings were pre-packed with fresh lubricant and sealed for transport back to site.

The Outcome

The Extec Jaw Crusher was returned to service within a reasonable timeframe, with the root cause of the bearing failure — damaged, out-of-tolerance housings — fully resolved rather than papered over. The structured approach, from initial measurement through to documented post-repair verification, means the client has a clear record of the work carried out and a machine that is correctly set up for the next service interval.
