Expertise Reveals Poor Original Installation Practices

CASE STUDY: Furnace Blower Fan Bearing Replacement — Industrial Manufacturing Facility

The Situation

Qualtex was called in urgently after a client reported a sudden rise in bearing temperatures on a furnace blower fan unit. The fan was operationally critical — with it out of service, the factory floor comes to a complete stop.

The Challenge

Bearing failure was imminent and the pressure to return the unit to service was immediate. What wasn’t yet known was whether the bearing issue was the full extent of the problem.

What Qualtex Did

Upon arriving on site, the Qualtex technician conducted a standard assessment of the motor and fan-set. An unusual rotation and noise from the coupling assembly prompted closer inspection — and what was found went well beyond the original call-out.

All fastenings on the motor-fan shaft coupling taper lock boss were loose. Significant wear was evident, indicating the coupling arrangement was at risk of failing in operation. A coupling failure of this type — with shafts and components moving under load — would have caused far greater damage, with the downtime and production losses far exceeding the cost of a properly executed repair.

Further investigation revealed the motor and fan shaft had been aligned during original installtion using folded paper in place of proper precision shim.

Working under urgency, the technician sourced a replacement spherical roller bearing for the fan shaft and new coupling components. The coupling was correctly assembled and fastened, and the motor and fan shaft were precision laser aligned using quality shim stock. All work was completed safely and efficiently.

The Outcome

The unit was returned to service promptly, with the factory back to full production. What began as an urgent bearing change uncovered and resolved a more serious underlying failure risk — one that, left undetected, could have caused significant mechanical damage and extended downtime. The job was done once and done properly, with the right parts, the right tools, and experienced hand
